The first thing you must do before contacting a web host is think of a name for your new web site. Like my site I chose meshplex.org. So, when you finally get your website all finished and it's ready to be published to the internet, you will need a web host. A web host is an online company that will provide private and public access to your website. In other words, to make your website available on the internet you must upload all your website files to the web host. Then everyone in the world can access your new website.
I use asmallorange to host my website because I found their servers to be very fast and they don't oversell. meshplex.org is very resource intensive script and it still loads twice as fast as other web hosts I have used.

[edit] How do I Find out if a Website Name is Already Taken?
OK, Once you have thought of a domain name for your site you must check to see if it's taken or not. Go to godaddy.com and enter your desired name. If your name is already taken it will give you a link to information about that particular domain name. In most cases, it will give you other domain name suggestions.
If your favorite name is taken and you are really determined to get it, there is a way you may be able to obtain it. You can possibly purchase the domain name from the owner. sedo has a system to allow individuals to purchase domain names and even full websites. It is setup similar to an auction where you can place a bid on a certain domain name or website of your choosing. When I launched meshplex I wanted meshplex.com but the owner of meshplex.com wanted too much for the domainname. So, I settled for the next best thing meshplex.org.

Shared hosting is the idea of placing many websites on one web server. For Example, meshplex.org is not the only web site thats hosted on the server, about 300 other web sites share the same web server. This is proven to be very economical because the costs of the server are shared among everyone on that particular server. Also, thats the only way hosting companies can offer hosting services for rock bottom prices.

Dedicated hosting -- only one web site is hosted on a web server it's ideal for very high traffic web sites or web applications that require maximum processor usage or system resources. Web site load and response time are fastest on dedicated server given the fact that the web application has total access to the processor and resources. This is also the most expensive option to run a website and prices can start around $50/month.

Yes, there are free web hosting out there. Your residential ISP may have free web hosting but if not Yahoo has the most reliable free web hosting package. Remember, you get what you pay for. These free web hosting accounts are very limited and one of the main disadvantages is that they do not allow your own domain, you will choose a sub domain name. For Example, if I hosted meshplex on geocities free account my domain name would be meshplex.geocities.com. The reason this is bad is because google and other search engines rank sub domains lower then top domains such as meshplex.org. That being said, you will receive less search engine traffic.
